Did you know?
Micheal FARADAY was a British scientist from South London.
He was born into a very poor family on 22 September, 1791.
Unlike some, Michael Faraday only received a basic formal education.
Later, his parents apprenticed him to a local bookbinder at the age of 14 years.
Michael developed interest in reading books.
He educated himself by reading books on wide range of scientific subjects.
Michael Faraday’s achievements
One day, Michael attended some lectures delivered by a chemist known as Humphry Davy Royal Institution.
He developed interest in working with the Humphry and thus applied to be his assistant.
The application was initially declined but accepted as a chemist assistant the following year.
When Michael was 30 years old, he published his work in electromagnetic rotation.
He described the principle behind the electric motor.
With the hope of improving transmission of electricity, he discovered electromagnetic induction.
This is the principle behind the electric transformer and generator.
Michael made a history in the inventions of electric motor, transformer and generator. Michael Faraday was part of those that coined many familiar names including “electrode”, “cathode”.
The farad, a unit of electric capacitance was named after him.
Michael made these remarkable achievements in an era when science was believed to be for the wealthy family.
Michael died on 25 August, 1867 at the age of 76 years at Hampton Court, England.
He did not blame his poor family or government but he struggled to make a difference.
